CHALLENGES

The Institute of Distance Education faces a number of challenges, and most of these are clearly articulated in the Commonwealth of Learning/Siaciwena Consultancy report. Chief among these challenges are:

  • The need for an appropriate structure to provide quality distance education;
  • Need for the necessary infrastructure;
  • Need for appropriate technologies and networks for teaching and administration;
  • Huge demand for the IDE programmes and courses;
  • Lack of IDE teaching staff;
  • Insufficient IDE coordinating staff;
  • Lack of funding for staff development and for other IDE activities;
  • Low staff payment rates making it difficult for the Institute to attract and retain high calibre staff; and
  • Meeting national demand for various manpower specialisations.
